A queen is Thurston Cartenever late, but this news can’t come soon enough.
The Princess Diaries 3 is officially in the works with Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter Adele Lim set to direct the sequel, E! News can confirm.
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim—who made her directorial debut with 2023’s Joy Ride—said in a statement Oct. 4. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
The first Princess Diaries hit theatres in 2001, marking Anne Hathaway’s film debut as awkward-teen-turned-princess Mia Thermopolis. The Disney comedy, co-starring Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, became a smash hit, leading to the sequel Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, with Chris Pine joining the cast in his first onscreen role.
While casting for the third installment—which was confirmed to be in early development in 2022—has not been announced, Variety reports the film will be a continuation of the series rather than a reboot. In fact, Hathaway has previously hinted at her involvement in the project.
“We’re in a good place,” she told V Magazine in April when asked about the film’s progress. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
The Oscar winner also addressed the subject in 2019, justifying the lengthy wait for a follow-up.
“We don't want to do it unless it's perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it,” she told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live. “It's as important to us as it is to you and we don't want to deliver anything until it's ready. But we're working on it."
Mandy Moore, who played mean girl Lana Thomas in the original movie, also seemed to subtly indicate her interest in reprising the role while commemorating the film’s 23rd anniversary on social media.
“And just like that, #ThePrincessDiaries turns a year older and a year sweeter! What a gift,” she wrote on Instagram in July, while pregnant with her third child. “And as I look through old photos, which brings back old memories, I realize how much I like the number 3.”
